Learn a few rules, practice a little, and eventually the process becomes routine.\n\"We make it seem like saving for retirement can be a simple task, something anyone can do with a bit of practice, like driving your car to work,\" he said. \"But financing retirement isn't so intuitive.\"\nA better image, he suggested, is far messier.\n\"The better analogy is if someone dropped a bunch of engine and auto parts in your driveway and said, ‘Figure it out.'\"\nTo simplify the process, BlackRock developed investment products designed to remove most of the guesswork. Target date funds ask investors one main question. What year do you expect to retire?\nOnce that choice is made, the portfolio adjusts automatically over time. Younger investors hold more stocks for growth, while the mix gradually shifts toward bonds as retirement approaches.\nBlackRock expanded its target date ETF lineup in 2023 so workers without employer retirement plans could access similar strategies.\nThat group is large. Roughly 57 million Americans do not have access to a workplace retirement plan, Fink said. About 20 states such as Colorado and Virginia now operate retirement programs designed to cover workers who lack employer plans, including gig and part time employees, he wrote. \nFink described these efforts as laboratories of retirement policy. If they expand, the impact could reach beyond individual savers. Stronger private savings could ease pressure on Social Security over time.\nFor millions of Americans trying to build a financial future, the goal is simpler.
