Amazon-Backed Anthropic Sues Department of War Over 'Supply Chain Risk' Designation

Amazon-backed (AMZN) Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of War for designating the company a "supply chain risk," according to a complaint filed Monday.

The Department of War, along with other federal agencies, have terminated contracts with Anthropic, after a disagreement over the military use of its artificial intelligence models, according to the company.

Secretary of War Peter Hegseth confirmed that the designation was "necessary to protect national security," Anthropic said in the complaint, citing a letter from the government official.

Anthropic alleged that no existing federal statute authorizes the action undertaken by the department. "These actions are unprecedented and unlawful. The Constitution does not allow the government to wield its enormous power to punish a company for its protected speech," the company said in the complaint.

Other federal agencies are also named in the lawsuit as defendants.

The lawsuit was filed in US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The Department of War did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
