Levi Strauss Says Expansion Beyond Denim is Driving Growth -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-12

1927 ET - Levi Strauss says efforts to expand its offerings, beyond the denim it's known for to apparel, are bearing fruit. Chief Financial Officer Harmit Singh says during a UBS conference the company has been focusing on its non-denim bottoms for men since exiting the Dockers brand, looking to grow its chinos business. The company has also introduced new denim skirts and dresses, and worked to grow its tops business, which contributed to a solid portion of its growth in the fourth quarter, he says. The company's bet on outerwear also did well in the quarter. Still, the company isn't broadening its offerings just to chase a bigger available market, he says. "It has to be driven by a denim aesthetic," he says. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
