Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is contemplating a contract to deploy its artificial intelligence technology on the unclassified networks of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, news outlets reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman had initially said that the company was looking to deploy on all NATO classified networks, Reuters reported. However, a company spokesperson later clarified that Altman misspoke and the contract opportunity was for NATO's unclassified networks, according to the report.

Microsoft has invested billions into OpenAI.

NATO's Communications and Information Agency operates under a large enterprise deal with Microsoft, which provides a range of NATO services, including access to OpenAI's Platform as a Service, a NATO official told MT Newswires via email a week later.

OpenAI did not respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
