NATO air defenses intercepted a missile fired from Iran that was entering Turkish airspace, the Turkish defense ministry said, marking the third time this month that the military alliance has defended Turkey from an apparent Iranian attack.
Air and missile defense assets of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, intercepted the munition, the defense ministry said. "Consultations are being conducted with the relevant country to clarify all aspects of the incident," the ministry also said.
Earlier on Friday, sirens were heard at Turkey's Incirlik air base, according to Turkey's state-run news agency. The base is a major hub that hosts U.S. troops and nuclear weapons.
Turkey warned Iran to stop firing missiles after a pair of other attacks that were also shot down by NATO air defenses. The first attack earlier in March targeted Incirlik, officials said.
