Uber Technologies has partnered with autonomous-vehicle developer Motional to launch a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, aiming to have fully driverless vehicles by the end of the year.

The two companies said Friday that Uber riders in Las Vegas can now be matched with an all-electric Motional Hyundai's Ioniq 5 robotaxi at certain pickup spots around the city.

Motional is majority owned by Hyundai Motor.

The new feature, which launched Friday, will have a vehicle operator monitoring the road from behind the steering wheel but will eventually be phased out for a fully driverless service by the end of this year.

The rollout is part of a 10-year partnership between Uber and Motional to scale autonomous ride-hailing, and follows earlier pilots for delivery in Los Angeles, California and an earlier pilot in Las Vegas.
