Market Chatter: Japan Plans Return to LNG Carrier Building After Seven-Year Gap

MT Newswires Live03-16 10:17

Japan may restart domestic production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, Kyodo News reported Monday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The private and public sectors are looking at ways to collaborate on this initiative as part of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's broader economic security strategy, said the publication.

The proposal involves Imabari Shipbuilding utilizing the manufacturing facilities of Sumitomo's (TYO:8053) affiliate Oshima Shipbuilding in Nagasaki Prefecture to restart construction, the news daily said.

Further deliberations are scheduled for Thursday, when a panel of experts will convene at a meeting hosted by the transport ministry to advance the project, the report added.
