Market Chatter: BYD Japan Says Carmaker Can't Compete Domestically as EV Subsidy Revision Favors Others

MT Newswires Live03-18 13:51

The head of BYD's (HKG:1211, SHE:002594) Japan unit said the carmaker could not compete domestically after the government revised the subsidies on electric vehicle purchases for a range of automakers, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday.

None of BYD's four models in Japan were granted a subsidy increase, while those from Toyota Motor (TYO:7203), Tesla and others saw substantial rises.

"The gap [with companies like Toyota Motor] has grown to up to nearly 1 million yen. We can't compete with 350,000 yen," Atsuki Tofukuji, the head of BYD's Japan unit, reportedly said.

According to the report, the maximum subsidy for EVs was revised upwards by 400,000 yen to 1.3 million yen, though those for BYD remained in the 350,000 yen to 450,000 yen range.
