Carrefour said it will offer shopping services directly via artificial-intelligence platform ChatGPT as the French grocer aims to capitalize on a boom in AI use.
Shoppers will be able to access Carrefour's site directly via OpenAI's ChatGPT, Carrefour said in a release Thursday. That will allow them to, for example, chat with the large language model's interface about ideas for dinner, with OpenAI then checking availability on Carrefour's site, or even putting together a shopping basket of ingredients to be bought, Carrefour said. The grocer will appear on ChatGPT's homepage among a list of available applications, it said.
The move places Carrefour among the first European retailers to make their products available directly through an AI service. ChatGPT last year launched an in-app shopping service in the U.S., allowing users there to buy goods from marketplaces like Etsy and Shopify. ChatGPT has some 26 million users in France, Carrefour said.
"By partnering with ChatGPT, Carrefour has again staked its place as a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, which is central to our strategic plan," said Emmanuel Grenier, the grocer's executive director of supply chain, e-commerce, data and digital transformation.
"We are offering ChatGPT users a new way of doing their grocery shopping via a simple, smooth buying process," Grenier said.
