Exchange-Traded Funds Fall as US Equities Drop After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 1.3%.

US equity indexes fell Friday as crude oil futures extended gains amid receding hopes of a diplomatic solution to the Iran war.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each rose about 1.9%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) shed 1.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was down 1.3%, and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was 1.5% lower.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) lost 1.8%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was down 0.8%.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 1.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) declined 5.1%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), climbed up 5%.

Commodities

Crude oil gained 4.6%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 4.5%. Natural gas added 2.3%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) gained 2.6%.

Gold on Comex rose 3%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) gained 3.5%. Silver was up 3.6%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) added 4.8%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 1.3%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) rose 1.1%, and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was 1.1% higher.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was down 2.1%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) slipped 0.7%, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) lost 1%.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 1.1%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also moved lower. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 2.3%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) shed 0.6%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) lost 0.5%, and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) was down 1.1%.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was down 3.6%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) declined 3.8%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) dropped 3.4%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) fell 3.6%.
