UniCredit's Moves in Belgium Don't Threaten Incumbents -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-26

1414 GMT - UniCredit's foothold in Belgium seems to be getting larger but it doesn't at present pose risk to the incumbents, ING's Jason Kalamboussis says in a research note. The Italian bank injected 136 million euros into its Belgian business--which it acquired through a deal for the online bank AION in 2024--leading to a capital of 316 million euros, the analyst says, citing a report in local media. The report suggests UniCredit could be eyeing Brussels as a hub for the launch of digital banking services throughout Europe, the analyst adds. "At this stage there is no threat for the banks in the Belgian market like KBC, BNPP [BNP Paribas], Belfius etc. or perceived intention to do anything in Belgium in our view," the analyst says.
