Canada Considering Support for Glencore Copper Smelter, Bloomberg Says, Citing Sources

--The Canadian government is considering a roughly 150 million Canadian dollar ($108 million) financial aid request to help Glencore meet pollution-control requirements at its copper smelter northwest of Montreal, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources.

--The commodities giant had threatened to shut down the smelter over new pollution requirements but the government is considering the aid request, which would help pay for new pollution-control systems, Bloomberg reports.

--Quebec has also proposed legislative changes that would give Glencore more time to reach tougher emissions targets, the report says.

--"While awaiting regulatory certainty, we are open to evaluating other mechanisms, particularly financial ones, for sharing risks," Glencore said to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, a government spokesperson said the smelter was a strategic asset.
