The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its Office of Defects Investigation is looking into 2006 Nissan Frontier vehicles after receiving notice that the vehicles could pose an imminent fire hazard.

The ODI said it has received a petition last month alleging the vehicles in question emanate a "powerful and persistent odor of raw gasoline," indicating potential problems with its fuel system.

The petition additionally alleged the vehicles can experience sudden engine stalling during startup and operation, potentially leading to collisions or the loss of vehicle control.

The petitioner noted that the problems are identical to those previously addressed in NHTSA recalls for the same make and model of car, and that the issues have persisted in the 2006 Nissan fleet despite prior action.

The ODI said it is opening a defect petition to evaluate the allegations.
