Acuity reported higher second-quarter profit on the back of growth in its intelligent spaces segment and said that it has taken actions to reduce labor costs in its lighting business.
The company posted net income of $96.8 million, or $3.09 a share, up from $77.5 million, or $2.45 a share, the year prior.
Adjusted earnings were $4.14 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected $4 a share.
Net sales rose 4.9% to $1.06 billion. Wall Street had expected $1.08 billion. Sales in the company's intelligent spaces segment rose $76.6 million to $248.1 million, while its lighting business saw sales decrease 2.8% to $817.4 million.
The company also said it took productivity improvement actions, primarily related to reducing labor costs in its lighting business that resulted in $6 million of special charges in the quarter.
