The F-15E Strike Eagle, like the one downed by Iran on Friday, uses multiple types of countermeasures to evade missiles. This includes thin metal strips called chaff and flares to confuse radar-guided and heat-seeking missiles.
The Air Force has been updating the jet's electronic countermeasures to a system called the Eagle Passive/Active Warning Survivability System, or EPAWSS. The tech is made by BAE Systems.
"EPAWSS is a defensive system designed to provide F-15 aircrews with situational awareness of, and countermeasures against, radio frequency $(RF)$ surface and airborne threats," the Pentagon said of the system in a 2020 testing report.
It couldn't be immediately determined whether the F-15E shot down on Friday was outfitted with EPAWSS.
