Canadian Mobile Carriers Ramping Up Pricing Competition Again -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-02 19:53

0753 ET - Canada's telcos could be entering another phase of the mobile plan price war, says TD Cowen's Vince Valentini in a report. The analyst says carriers were pricing plans very aggressively in 1Q. "This pricing is not stimulating better subscriber volume growth across the industry, but instead, it is just causing elevated churn and a negative repricing cycle," he says. This will weigh on the big telecom names Rogers, BCE and Telus, which Valentini downgrades to hold from buy. "If... pricing reverts back to what we were seeing in March, then we believe there could be even further downside risk to our estimates and target prices," he adds. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
