United Airlines is the latest U.S. carrier to increase fees on checked bags, following a similar move by JetBlue Airways earlier this week.
The cost to check a first or second bag is going up by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Latin America, the airline said Thursday. Prices for a third checked bag on trips are set to increase by $50. The increase goes into effect for tickets purchased on or after Friday.
United said the increase was its first on checked-bag fees in two years. As before, customers who prepay at least 24 hours before a flight can receive a $5 discount in most cases. Passengers who were entitled to one free checked bag previously will still receive the benefit.
JetBlue raised bag fees, citing the higher costs the company was facing. American Airlines increased its bag fees in mid-February.
