Samsung Electronics Rides Chips Super Cycle -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-08

0224 GMT - Samsung Electronics 1Q earnings beat expectations, with a continuing memory chips super-cycle benefiting the company, Nomura analysts CW Chung and Eon Hwang say in a note. Strong DRAM and NAND memory chip prices drove substantial revenue, while a weaker Korean won boosted the semiconductor division, they say. Mobile and home appliance operating profits, however, fell year-over-year amid memory price hikes and heightened competition, which has been a concern in the market. Nomura maintains a buy rating on the stock with a target price of KRW320,000. Shares are up 7.0% at KRW210,000.(venkat.pr@wsj.com)
