Microsoft plans to invest $10 billion, or about 1.6 trillion yen, in Japan between 2026 and 2029, according to a statement last Friday.

The investment, which focuses on three core areas - technology, trust, and talent - was unveiled during a Tokyo visit by Microsoft President Brad Smith.

Microsoft's pledge includes expanding local data centers, strengthening public-private cybersecurity ties with national institutions, and training over one million engineers and workers by 2030.

Building on a prior $2.9 billion investment from April 2024, these commitments directly align with Prime Minister Takaichi's national priorities of advancing technological growth and economic security, the statement read.

Given that generative AI usage in Japan now exceeds the global average, and with a projected shortage of 3.26 million AI and robotics specialists by 2040, this strategy directly addresses critical gaps in infrastructure, security collaboration, and skills development.
