Tesla plans to increase its presence in Japan to at least 60 retail locations as it aims to be the nation's leading imported car brand by 2027, Reuters News reported Friday, citing country manager Richi Hashimoto.
Sales have grown due to improved service center coverage and training investments over the last two years, despite Japan's still-limited electric vehicle adoption, the newswire said.
As EV demand slows sharply in the U.S. and other major markets, Tesla is turning greater attention to regions with lower EV penetration, the publication said.
Hashimoto, speaking at the launch event for the Model Y L, reaffirmed this mid- to long-term ambition to reach the top spot among foreign automakers in Japan, potentially by 2026, the report said.
