Kuwait said protesters attacked its consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Tuesday in escalating violence involving pro-Iranian militia groups near the Iran and Kuwait borders. Kuwait's foreign ministry condemned the "flagrant assaults on the sanctity of the consular mission," denying it had allowed its territory to be used to launch attacks against other countries.
At least one Iraqi official alleged earlier Tuesday that rocket attacks on southern Iraq came from Kuwait. Tensions between Kuwait and Iraq have been building for weeks as militias loyal to Iran have launched attacks across the southern border into Kuwait and the U.S. has carried out airstrikes against Iraqi militias.
