Convenience Store Traffic Slows as Gas Prices Rise -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-11 04:31

1631 ET - Consumers are pulling back on trips to convenience stores as gas prices rise due to the conflict in Iran, Jefferies analysts say in a note. Convenience store foot traffic rose 0.5% in March, marking a sequential decline from February, when traffic had rebounded after storm-related disruptions in January, the analysts say. The Iran conflict may continue to pressure traffic if prices remain elevated, while lower fuel prices could support convenience-store profitability, particularly those with scale and disciplined pricing, the analysts say. In that scenario. they see Casey's General Stores, Alimentation Couche-Tard and Murphy USA as the companies in the best spot to benefit. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
