American Airlines is the latest airline to boost bag fees as the industry contends with a rapid run-up in the price of fuel.

American said Thursday that it would raise the cost of checking a first and second bag by $10 each , following similar moves by United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest.

American will charge $50 for a first bag and $60 for a second for customers who pay at the airport on domestic and short international flights. Those who pay in advance will get a $5 discount.

The price of checking a third bag on U.S. flights is going up by $50, to $200. Those price increases go into effect for tickets booked on or after Thursday.

Domestic fliers traveling on bare-bones Basic Economy tickets will see even steeper fees starting next month. They will be charged $55 for their first checked bag and $65 for a second starting May 18 (and can also get a $5 discount by paying ahead of time.)

Airlines' luggage fees tend to move in lockstep. Carriers often bump up such fees as a way to offset rising costs, like jet fuel, as they did just two years ago. Those charges tend to stick, even as fares rise and fall with demand.

Those with elite status on American are still eligible for complimentary bags, and holding the airline's co-branded credit card also comes with a baggage perk.
