Vice President JD Vance met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday ahead of the high-stakes U.S. talks with the Iranian government in Islamabad. It was an opportunity for handshakes, photos and warm words about Pakistan's role in helping the two sides come together, according to an official Pakistani account of the meeting.

Pakistan is in the unusual position of being trusted by both President Trump's White House and the Iranian regime. Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff joined the meeting on the U.S. side, while the Pakistani leader was accompanied by two top ministers.
