NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday said that European allies "are doing everything the United States is asking," even as he acknowledged some had been "a bit slow" to offer support when the U.S. launched its military operation in Iran.
"The overwhelming majority of Europeans have done what the U.S. asked and what was previously agreed in these circumstances," he said at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute in Washington, D.C. "They have heard and are responding to President Trump's requests."
Rutte said that in his White House meeting with Trump on Wednesday, the president "certainly made his disappointment clear."
"When it came time to provide the logistical and other support the United States needed in Iran, some allies were a bit slow, to say the least," he said. "In fairness, they were also a bit surprised...President Trump opted not to inform allies ahead of time."
