Duolingo's Chess Play Faces Competition -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-09

Duolingo's move to into the chess world could be dampening the language app's first-quarter user growth, D.A. Davidson analyst Wyatt Swanson says in a note. The analyst's latest in-house data show that March user growth lost all the momentum seen in January and February. Meanwhile, data from Chess.com, the chess world's dominant online platform, show first-quarter average daily member registrations up 25%. "We can't specifically point to Chess.com taking users from Duolingo, but the meaningful growth seen from Chess.com in late 2025 and early 2026 may indicate some level of user migration from Duolingo to Chess.com," Swanson says. Duolingo launched its chess course in April 2025 and fully rolled out over the course of the year. (chris.kuo@wsj.com)
