Canada's Ruling Liberals Within Reach of Majority Government After Another Opposition Defection

Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals are near to securing a majority government after another member of the opposition Conservative Party crossed the floor.

Marilyn Gladu, a veteran member of parliament for the Ontario region of Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong, said Wednesday she is joining Carney's government.

The latest addition to the Liberal caucus brings the party's seat count to 171, one short of a slim majority. There are three by-elections set for April 13, including two in what are considered Liberal safe seats in Toronto and another in Quebec that is expected to be a tight race.

With a majority, Carney's party could govern without fear of an election until 2029 and with no need to rely on opposition support to get legislation passed.

Blackline Safety Agrees to C$850 Million Go-Private Deal With Francisco Partners Affiliate

Blackline Safety has agreed to be acquired by affiliates of private equity investment firm Francisco Partners Management in a deal worth C$850 million.

The Calgary, Alberta-based connected safety technology company said that Francisco Partners will pay each shareholder up to C$9.50 per share, made up of C$9.00 in cash plus a contingent value right of up to C$0.50 apiece.

Shares of Blackline Safety rose 25.6% to C$8.93.

CAE to Cut About 2% of Global Workforce

CAE is cutting about 2% of its global workforce and considering the future of operations at three sites in Europe as it adjusts to softer market demand in civil aviation.

The Montreal aviation and defense-technology company on Wednesday told employees about 280 jobs would be affected by organizational adjustments. Of that figure, about 180 positions are in Quebec, mainly in the greater Montreal area, Samantha Golinski, vice-president of communications, said.

The actions support changes already underway, including targeted adjustments to the global footprint to match current market conditions, Golinski said.

CAE has also launched a review of operations at sites in Barcelona, Brussels and Stockholm, though no decisions have been made. The company, which provides flight simulators and operates a training network, has roughly 240 sites and training locations in more than 40 countries.

Air Canada to Test Independent Arbitration to Settle Passenger Claims

Air Canada is testing an alternative process for resolving compensation claims from passengers using a third party in an effort to avoid long waits.

The flag carrier said it is randomly selecting 500 customers who will be invited to transfer information from outstanding claims with the federal Canadian Transportation Agency to an independent and impartial provider.

The arbitrator will decide on those claims within 90 days of receiving all the information from both sides. Decisions will be binding on the airline but not on passengers unless they accept them.

Air Canada said that following the pilot, it will evaluate the results and then consult with the government on possible next steps.

I-80 Gold Shares Rise After Assay Results From Nevada Underground Project

I-80 Gold's shares rose after the miner released assay results from a recent drilling campaign at the Archimedes underground project on its Ruby Hill property in northeastern Nevada.

Toronto-listed shares rose 2.2% to C$2.36.

Tyler Hill, vice president of geology, said drilling continues to return consistent and positive results that are improving the company's confidence in both the scale and continuity of mineralization at Archimedes. The consistency of the results seen across the drill campaign is similar to drilling on i-80 Gold's other two underground projects, for which feasibility studies are expected to be released this quarter, he said.

DPM Metals First-Quarter Gold Production Rises, Vares Contributes New Silver

DPM Metals said it is on track to meet its guidance after reporting preliminary production figures for its first quarter.

The company processed 733,000 metric tons of ore in the quarter, compared with a year earlier, when it processed 680,142 tons.

Gold processed came to 51,000 ounces, up from 49,863 ounces.

Silver processed totaled 1.04 million ounces. The company began producing silver after acquiring Adriatic Metals last year, bringing the Vares mine into its portfolio.

Endeavour Silver First-Quarter Gold, Silver Output Rise

Endeavour Silver reported higher gold and silver production in its first quarter thanks to new production coming online.

Throughput more than doubled in the quarter to 456,657 metric tons. Consolidated silver production was 1.88 million ounces the first quarter, 56% higher a year earlier, but the company noted that it was slightly below plan.

The company credits the rise to the addition of its Kolpa mine in Peru and its Terronera mine in Mexico, but noted that Guanacevi was 22% lower this quarter mostly due to lower silver grades and throughput.

Consolidated gold production was 11,740 ounces in the period, 41% higher than the first quarter of the previous year.

Barrick Welcomes Ontario Court Dismissal of Appeal Over Human-Rights Abuse Allegations at Tanzania Mine

An appeal court in Canada has backed an earlier ruling that the province of Ontario isn't the appropriate forum to consider claims against Barrick Mining alleging human-rights abuses near the company's North Mara gold mine in Tanzania.

The Toronto-based company said it welcomed the decision by the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissing an appeal by certain Tanzanian residents who allege abuses by members of the Tanzanian Police Force in the vicinity of the North Mara mine.

The Ontario Superior Court in November 2024 granted Barrick's motion to dismiss the claims on the grounds the court lacked jurisdiction and that Tanzania was a more appropriate location to litigate the matter. The company has refuted what it previously described as baseless allegations by a small number of activist nongovernmental organizations.

Gold, Silver Prices Jump. They Could Reach This High by the End of 2026.

By Adam Clark, Barron's

Gold and silver prices rose Wednesday. One of 2025's hottest trades could regain momentum if the U.S. and Iran reach a lasting peace.

Precious metals were boosted by the announcement of a cease-fire between the U.S. and Iran. That could lift hopes of interest-rate cuts and end selling of reserves by central banks - so long as the truce lasts.

Front month Comex gold for April rose nearly 2% to $4,749.50 an ounce, its third consecutive rise, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It is up 9.8% since the start of this year. Front month Comex silver for April rose 4.7% to $75.224, snapping a three-session losing streak.

Gold and silver racked up major gains last year but have fallen during the Iran conflict, driven by interest-rate expectations-higher energy prices linked to the war have dimmed the prospects of a near-term Fed rate cut, dragging down the price of nonyielding assets such as gold and silver.

Another drag on gold prices has been selling by central banks. Turkey has sold or loaned out $20 billion of gold since the start of fighting in the Middle East, according to the Financial Times, as it sought to support the value of its currency. Poland and Russia have also been cited as potential sellers.

If markets begin to price in a lasting peace in the Middle East, there are factors that could drive gold much higher from here.

"The medium-term tailwinds-stagflation risks, U.S. election uncertainty, and the prospect of a weaker U.S. dollar alongside falling real rates-should support a move toward $5,900/oz by late 2026," wrote UBS strategist Dominic Schnider in a research note.
