EU Foreign Policy Decision-Making Should Shift Post-Hungary Election, Von Der Leyen Says -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-13

1435 GMT - The EU should use the momentum from Hungary's election over the weekend to rethink how EU countries hash out the bloc's foreign policy, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen says during a press conference. "Hungary is coming back to the European path, but I think we should also look at the lessons learned inside the European Union," she says. While EU countries only need a qualified majority to approve most policy moves, sensitive areas such as foreign policy and EU membership require unanimous agreement. Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban frequently clashed with his counterparts over the EU's support for Ukraine. "For example, I think moving to qualified majority voting in foreign policy is an important way to avoid systemic blockages," von der Leyen says. (edith.hancock@wsj.com)
