Fed's Goolsbee: Don't Be Surprised If Consumer Confidence Sours -- Market Talk
Dow Jones04-14
1459 ET - Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said not to be surprised by worsening consumer sentiment amid the conflict in Iran. "That is very often tied to the public price of gasoline," he said on Fox News. As consumers face higher prices at the pump, the Fed monitors consumers' longer-term inflation expectations-which could become a self-fulfilling prophecy if they drift higher. Short term inflation expectations, however, are more susceptible to sudden energy shocks. "This is a space we got to keep an eye on, because the American consumer has been the strongest thing we got going," he said. (jessica.coacci@wsj.com)
