estimates to protect your capital. \n\nStep One: Estimate Future Earnings or Cash Flow\nUsing the company’s current earnings as a baseline, we can estimate how the business might grow over time by looking at historical growth rates. \n\nThe industry outlook and company-specific drivers, such as new products or expansion plans, also help gauge future demand. \n\nHowever, be conservative in your estimates, as overestimating growth is a common but costly mistake. \n\nInstead of a best-case scenario, allocate a margin of safety by using modest growth percentages to reduce the risk of overpaying for a stock. \n\nStep Two: Apply a Reasonable Valuation Multiple\nWe can use simple metrics such as price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio or price-to-book (P/B) ratio to get reasonable valuations.\n\nP/E (SGX: OV8) as an example.\n\nAs an essential business, Sheng Siong is a stable supermarket brand where growth is steady but not explosive. \n\nFor FY2025, the Group reported earnings-per-share (EPS) of S$0.0998. \n\n\nSheng Siong announced a year-on-year (YoY) revenue growth of 9.9% in FY2025, with a net profit of S$149.2 million, an 8.5% increase YoY. \n\nTo keep estimates conservative, we will project five years forward with an annual growth rate of 5%. \n\nUsing the formula for compound growth, the future EPS is calculated as 0.0998 x (1.05)⁵, which equals approximately S$0.1274.\n\nConsumer staples often have stable P/E ratios.\n\nInstead of using a peak multiple, we will use a reasonable 25x P/E to stay safe. \n\nMultiplying our future EPS of S$0.1274 by 25 gives us a fair value of S$3.19.\n\nNow, we apply our margin of safety. \n\n\n10% discount: S$3.19 × 0.9 = S$2.87\n20% discount: S$3.19 × 0.8 = S$2.55\n\nSheng Siong’s current share price of S$3.11 (as of 10 April 2026) is slightly lower than its estimated fair value, but it can be risky as it is above the margin of safety. \n\nFair value is not static.
