Sony Group (SONY) will receive Japan government subsidies of up to 60 billion Japanese yen ($377.2 million) for an image sensor facility in the city of Kumamoto, Reuters reported late Thursday, citing industry minister Ryosei Akazawa as saying in a press conference.

Image sensors will be essential for autonomous driving and physical artificial intelligence, Akazawa said during the press conference.

Sony did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
