UniCredit's Commerzbank Bid Remains Tactical Step -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-20

1306 GMT - UniCredit's presentation of its plan for Commerzbank provided useful context and financial assumptions ahead of the opening of the bid period, Citi analysts say in a research note. The bank is launching a takeover offer next month with the aim of raising its shareholding above the key threshold. "We see this purely as a tactical step by UniCredit in order to overcome the 30% cliff-edge and provide more flexibility to now increase the stake in the open market," analysts write. The Italian group is unlikely to increase the bid price and any tender should be limited, they add. The offer price is currently lower than its share price. Commerzbank shares rise 2.2% while the banking subindex of the Stoxx 600 and UniCredit shed 1.8%. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
