French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host a virtual meeting of dozens of countries on Friday to discuss plans to restore shipping access to the Strait of Hormuz after the conflict ends.

Macron wrote on social media earlier this week that the goal is a "multilateral and purely defensive mission" that would work to restore freedom of navigation in the waterway "when security conditions allow." Iran announced a closure of the strait soon after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on it in late February, curtailing oil and fertilizer shipments and sending global energy prices soaring.

Friday's meeting won't include "belligerent" countries in the conflict, Macron has said, meaning the U.S., Israel and Iran aren't expected to participate. The U.K. said Thursday that the meeting would focus on supporting the current cease-fire and ensuring that shipping routes are reopened and secured for the long-term. Iranian state media said Tehran's position is that countries beyond the region have no right to intervene.
