Cal-Maine Isn't Seen as Biggest Price-Fixing Culprit -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-20

0837 ET - Cal-Maine Foods has done less price fixing than other agricultural sectors, Benchmark analyst Ben Klieve says. The Wall Street Journal reported Cal-Maine could be named in an antitrust lawsuit about price fixing. Klieve argues animal protein products are often targets of such lawsuits, but the egg category is one of the most fragmented. Its top four leaders have 35% of market share, while the biggest four beef and chicken companies have roughly 80% share of their markets, Klieve says. Cal-Maine's pricing has underperformed the market average as it shifted toward specialty eggs and away from market-based pricing, making it less susceptible to price fluctuations, Klieve says.(katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
