American Airlines is saying "no thanks" to merging with United Airlines.

"American Airlines is not engaged with or interested in any discussions regarding a merger with United Airlines," the company said Friday.

The statement came after reports earlier this week that United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby had pitched President Trump on what would be a megadeal to bring together two of the largest U.S. carriers.

Industry officials have said such a merger would create significant antitrust concerns and would likely face pushback from consumers, lawmakers and state attorneys general. American said Friday that merging with United would be bad for competition and consumers.

United Airlines didn't immediately comment.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said this week that "it's not something the president or the White House have an opinion on or are weighing in on."
