Communications-services rose amid generally strong earnings.
AT&T recorded higher revenue in its latest quarter on growth in its advanced connectivity business as it continued to add customers for its postpaid phone service and high-speed internet.
T-Mobile continued its retreat amid investor aversion to a deal the cell-phone carrier is reportedly considering to merge with its largest shareholder, German carrier Deutsche Telekom.
