Swiss Watch Exports Expected to Remain Volatile -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-21

0824 GMT - The Swiss watch sector could continue to face challenges this year, Vontobel's Manuel Lang says. "We expect monthly data to remain noisy in 2026, and March confirms that view," the analyst says. Total exports of Swiss timepieces fell 1% in March and were up 1.4% in the first quarter. This figure overestimates demand due to worsening consumer sentiment versus the start of the year, the analyst says. The war in the Middle East hasn't yet shown up in the aggregate export numbers, but local demand already looks fragile, he adds. Meanwhile, the U.S. remains difficult to read because of tariff and inventory effects, and the performance in China suggests stabilization rather than a strong comeback, Lang says.
