BOE to Reinforce Wait-And-See Mode at Next Week's Meeting -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-21 01:13

1313 ET - Bank of England policymakers may want to offer a less hawkish note next week after investors priced in multiple rate hikes at last month's policy meeting, HSBC's Elizabeth Martins says in a note. Commentary since, plus the ceasefire and falls in energy prices, mean that these bets have now been scaled back, she says. With a volatile gilt market, the BOE will probably want to keep investors calm. Neither March inflation nor February labor-market numbers due this week will show much about the pass-through of the Iran war shock, she says. "Knowing what we know now, it looks hard to muster the five required votes for a hike over the next couple of meetings at least," Martins says. (edward.frankl@wsj.com)
