United Joins Delta in Trimming Capacity as Fuel Costs Rise -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05:20

1720 ET - United Airlines is the latest carrier to announce cuts to its capacity plans as jet fuel costs soar amid disruptions from the war in Iran. The airline says it has already made adjustments to its schedule for the rest of the year to account for volatile and elevated fuel prices, and now projects capacity in the third and fourth quarters will be flat to up 2%. Overall, United expects a 5-point capacity reduction versus its original plan, and says it will move quickly to implement either additional reductions in capacity or restorations to meet anticipated demand. Delta earlier this month similarly said it is trimming capacity growth as it waits for fuel costs to improve. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
