The economic fallout from the Iran war has extended to a planned Saudi funding deal for New York's Metropolitan Opera. The storied arts institution announced that the agreement, signed last year, was canceled due to the "current economic situation in Saudi Arabia."

The Saudi economy has suffered from the ongoing conflict and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has restricted the nation's oil exports and forced it to cut production.

Under the original agreement, the renowned opera company was set to travel to Riyadh each winter for five years to perform fully staged operas and concerts.
