Solid U.K. Retail Sales Data Lowers Prospect of BOE Rate Cut -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-24 16:54

0854 GMT - U.K. retail sales data for March was stronger than expected, lowering the probability of the Bank of England cutting interest rates in the coming months, eToro's Lale Akoner says in a note. Monthly retail sales rose 0.7% in March, above the 0.1% consensus forecast by economists in a WSJ poll. "Overall, it seems that consumption is holding up for now, but quality of demand is weak and increasingly tied to higher essential spending," Akoner says. Investors fully price in the possibility of two quarter-point interest-rate rises by the BOE in 2026, LSEG data show. (miriam.mukuru@wsj.com)
