American Airlines Says United Merger Was Always a 'Non-Starter' -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-23

0823 ET - American Airlines Chief Executive Robert Isom says the idea of a merger with United Airlines was "a non-starter from the get-go." While the executive refused to confirm whether United had approached American about a combination, he told CNBC that he was sure most regulators would see antitrust problems with a merger of that size. "There's no way to view that as anything but anti-competitive," he said. The comments come after President Trump said he wouldn't be in favor of a United-American combo. United CEO Scott Kirby similarly dodged merger questions earlier this week, but did say he is looking to better compete with international carriers. (katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
