Fujitsu Ltd. announced Thursday that it has established a joint research center with Carnegie Mellon University in the field of physical AI (artificial intelligence).
By bringing together expertise and technologies spanning multiple fields, including robotics, AI and language understanding, the center aims to serve as a global research hub bridging academia and industry.
The Japanese company plans to release the basic operating system for physical AI, which can understand specific tasks and control robots at a specific space, by the end of this year. The company intends to provide this software to multiple robot manufacturers. It also plans to gradually expand the software's functionality, aiming to develop a system by 2030 that enables multiple robots to autonomously coordinate their movements across different locations. Technologies developed by the center will be incorporated into the OS in stages.
Fujitsu unveiled a robot equipped with its proprietary AI technology for the first time at a briefing held on the same day in Saiwai Ward, Kawasaki. The robot estimates terrain and other conditions based on the movement of its joints without using cameras or sensors, enabling stable walking control. It successfully transported cargo without dropping it on uneven terrain, whereas a robot not equipped with the technology dropped its cargo.
"We are considering deployment first in manufacturing sites and similar environments," said Genta Suzuki, head of Fujitsu's Physical AI Laboratory. "It is important to pursue co-creation rather than acting by one company," he added.
