T-Mobile US is the next major U.S. telecommunications provider to report earnings, and Wall Street will be watching for more than just a financial beat following reports of a possible mega-merger.

T-Mobile is scheduled to report first-quarter financial results after the stock market closes on Tuesday. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect the company to post adjusted earnings of $2.01 a share on revenue of $22.98 billion.

Wall Street is also expecting T-Mobile to add 393,100 net phone postpaid subscribers over the period.

Shareholders will be listening closely for any information the company shares regarding merger speculation. Specifically, Bloomberg reported on April 21 that German telecom provider Deutsche Telekom AG is weighing a merger with T-Mobile. The report said that discussions were preliminary and that any deal would require the political support of both the German and U.S. governments.

T-Mobile told Barron's in an email following the report that "as per our usual practice, T-Mobile and DT do not comment on speculation regarding our corporate activity, nor are there specifics to share."

T-Mobile stock dropped 1.5% on April 21.

Shares have fallen 8.8% this year. Some investors are worried that a price war between T-Mobile and its competitors AT&T and Verizon Communications could weigh on the company's bottom line. That risk could increase if T-Mobile is forced to roll out aggressive promotions following a potential release of a foldable iPhone, which is expected to carry a high price tag.

AT&T and Verizon have already posted their first-quarter financial results. Both companies reported better-than-expected earnings and postpaid net phone additions.
