Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google and the US Department of Defense signed a deal allowing the Pentagon to use the tech giant's artificial intelligence models on classified work, The Information reported late Monday, citing a person with knowledge of the situation.
Pentagon will be able to use Google's AI for "any lawful government purpose," the unnamed source told the news outlet.
The new agreement is an amendment to the company's existing contract, The Information reported, citing a spokesperson for Google Public Sector.
"We are proud to be part of a broad consortium of leading AI labs and technology and cloud companies providing AI services and infrastructure in support of national security," the spokesperson reportedly said. "We remain committed to the private and public sector consensus that AI should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry without appropriate human oversight."
Alphabet didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
