Risk Remains, Despite Mattel's Better-Than-Anticipated 1Q -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-30

0819 ET - Don't read too much into Mattel's better-than-expected 1Q sales results, as the period typically accounts for less than 20% of the toymaker's annual sales, JPMorgan analysts say in a research note. "That said, sales did beat our forecast by 8% and grew 4% year over year," they say. Overall, though, the story remains the same. Hot Wheels continues to offset pressure on the company's flagship Barbie brand. The company should benefit from a strong entertainment slate this year, including "Toy Story 5" and its own "Masters of the Universe" film, but that doesn't remove the overhang on Barbie, nor the margin outlook. If oil prices remain high, Mattel will likely face margin pressure, the analysts say. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
