U.S. airlines spent more than $5 billion on jet fuel in March, up 56% from the prior month, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The hefty bill came as airlines used 19.5% more fuel in March than they did in February, the data showed. But the cost per gallon of fuel also rose substantially, jumping nearly 31%. Rising fuel costs have threatened to add billions of dollars of unexpected expenses for airlines this year, prompting carriers to pare back routes and raise fares to fight mounting costs.
