The U.S. announced a 45-day extension of the cease-fire between Israel and the Lebanese government following two days of talks between the countries in Washington. However, the talks didn't include the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group that Israeli forces have clashed with in southern Lebanon.
"We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a social-media post on Friday.
Pigott said the U.S. will hold a new round of Israel-Lebanon talks on June 2 and June 3. The Pentagon will also host a meeting with military delegations from both countries on May 29.
