News) – Gold prices showed promise in the early going this week, but the yellow metal deteriorated steadily as the days progressed, with every move higher capped by hotter inflation data, higher yields and a stronger dollar, while geopolitical risk provided only limited support.Spot gold kicked off the week trading at $4,687.50 per ounce, but the market quickly turned lower as traders shifted their focus from safe-haven demand to stubborn inflation, rising Treasury yields and a stronger U.S. dollar.After dipping as low as $4,650 per ounce overnight, gold saw a strong push at the outset of the North American session to start the week, and set its weekly high above $4,768 per ounce just before 8 pm Eastern on Monday evening. But the optimism in metals markets was short-lived, as gold would spend the coming days struggling to hold above $4,700.The first major move came on Tuesday, after U.S. CPI rose 0.6% in April and 3.8% year-over-year, pushing spot gold down toward the $4,700 level as markets pared expectations for Fed easing.Selling pressure intensified on Wednesday after producer prices jumped 1.4% in April, sending gold to session lows near $4,680 as traders treated the PPI print as another sign that inflation pressures were broadening.Gold attempted to stabilize on Thursday as retail sales rose 0.5% and jobless claims increased to 211,000, but the relief was limited as the dollar continued its four-day advance and markets watched the Trump-Xi meeting for fresh geopolitical direction.The sharpest move came on Friday, when spot gold broke below $4,600 as bond yields spiked, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising to 4.54% and the dollar strengthening further. The selloff came amid ongoing Middle East tensions and oil holding above $100, as traders focused on the inflationary impact of the Iran war and the risk that the Fed will keep rates higher for longer. Spot gold set the weekly low of $4,511 right at the North American open, and was trading near $4,543 per ounce heading into the weekend.The latest Kitco News Weekly Gold Survey showed Wall Street throwing in the towel on gold’s near-term prospects, while Main Street maintained a bullish bias despite gold’s decline.“Surging interest rates and an appreciating greenback weighed on gold prices at the end of the week,” noted Marc Chandler, managing director at Bannockburn Global Forex. “The yellow metal had been chopping inside Tuesday’s range (~$4638-$4773) but broke down ahead of the weekend and reached an eight-day low.”“It has not traded below $4500 since the end of March,” Chandler added. “A break of it could signal a push toward $4350.”“Unchanged,” said Adrian Day, president of Adrian Day Asset Management. “That does not mean flat! Gold will likely continue to be quite volatile as short-term competing forces each take the upper hand in turns.”“Near term, higher oil prices and global central banks’ bias towards tightening in response suggest lower prices,” Day explained. “Longer term, the factors that have driven gold over the past three years will reassert themselves: steady buying from central banks and others in the face of deterioration in the status of the U.S. globally.”“Up,” said Rich Checkan, president and COO of Asset Strategies International. “Although no end seems immediately in sight, cooler heads are prevailing and giving some calm to the markets. Gold should benefit from the relative calm.”“Up,” said Darin Newsom, senior market analyst at Barchart.com. “It’s possible Friday’s meltdown eliminated most of the sell orders in the futures market. If so, then continued support from global central banks could spark a short-term rally. Technically, the June issue tested its low previous daily close of $4,533.30, possibly bringing some money in as well.”“Am I going against Newton’s First Law of Motion applied to markets (a trending market will stay in that trend until acted upon by an outside force)? Yes,” Newsom added. “But I’m thinking that outside force could change next week.”Daniel Pavilonis, senior commodities broker at RJO Futures, said he sees gold’s late-week slide as primarily a reaction to the lack of an Iran breakthrough with China, along with rising Treasury yields – which are themselves reacting to the possibility of rate hikes.“The long end of the curve is moving higher,” he said. “That is basically saying that we have inflation: It's going to be here, it's going to be sticky. It's risk-off across the board, so maybe things were a little bit more exacerbated. I think numbers coming out of China, gold demand hasn't been what it was, but that's across the board for commodities. Energy, on the other hand, even through everything that's going on in Iran, it really hasn't been a big demand spot, although obviously the strait opening would be more beneficial.”“I think what you'll see is a little bit of reprieve,” Pavilonis said. “It's just not going to be an easy trade like it was a few months ago. We saw a pretty good jump here [earlier in the week], had an opportunity to pull some money off the table and wait for another opportunity to get long again.”“Ultimately, I do think that [gold] is going to grind higher,” he added. “Right now, it's just the market's kind of jittery. We've had a nice run-up across the board in risk assets, and I think you're seeing some premium taken off the table. Probably also a little bit because of yields and where they are right now, and questioning whether or not they can go a lot higher from here.”Pavilonis said he’ll be watching to see how the next few trading sessions play out, and how Trump emerges from the talks with China’s Xi.“If he could spin this as a good thing and calm yields down… maybe he can even play this in a way where stepping away from Hormuz helps China, and then things become more reciprocal,” he said “That's a possibility, but I don't know. The expectation was, as usual with meetings with China, that something big is going to come out of it, and nothing came out of it. So I think we just retract to where we were trending prior to the run-up into the meeting, and then continue to grind higher from there.”Looking ahead to next week, Pavilonis agreed that Nvidia earnings represent a major risk, especially for the tech sector, where even the slightest whiff of bad news could have an outsized impact.“Maybe it's a matter of just losing market share because now there's more competition,” he said. “I think ultimately that can be a risk-off event.”Pavilonis said he’ll be watching $4,500 in the spot market as critical support for gold’s near-term trajectory. “I think if we can't hold $4,500, the trend breaks to the low side and then we continue lower to the high $3,800s.”This week, 13 analysts participated in the Kitco News Gold Survey, with Wall Street sentiment sliding deep into bearish territory after gold’s failure to hold multiple support levels. Only two experts, or 15%, expected to see gold prices move higher during the week ahead, while fully 10 – 77% of the total – predicted a price decline. The remaining analyst, representing 8%, expected to see consolidation during the week ahead.Meanwhile, 29 votes were cast in Kitco’s online poll, with Main Street investors maintaining a bullish majority opinion despite gold’s setbacks. 17 retail traders, or 59%, looked for gold prices to rise next week, while another 4, or 14%, predicted the yellow metal would lose ground. The remaining 8 investors, representing 28% of the total, expected gold prices to trend sideways in the coming week.Next week’s economic data features housing, manufacturing, and consumer sentiment data, along with the minutes from the most recent FOMC meeting, but the dominant narrative for the precious metals market is likely to remain the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and its impact on oil prices and bond yields.On Tuesday morning, markets will receive U.S. Pending Home Sales for April, followed by the Wednesday afternoon release of the minutes from the March Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting.Then on Thursday, traders will be watching weekly jobless claims, the Philly Fed Manufacturing Survey, April Housing Starts, and the S&P Flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs for May.The week’s data releases wrap up on Friday morning with final University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment.Adam Button, head of currency strategy at Forexlive.com, said the global tide is beginning to turn as the effects of the Iran war – high energy prices and rising inflation – begin to filter through financial markets to the real economy.“It cracked in Asia over the last few days,” he said. “Oil keeps ratcheting higher.”He said the market is also disappointed to see nothing come of the Trump-Xi summit. “There's some positive comments from [China] today, but there's nothing really from Trump,” he said. “I think going into China, there was an expectation of something more, some sort of big announcement that would either be growth-positive, or tariff-negative… and then nothing did come out of it. I think they were trying it behind the scenes to organize something, and it just didn't happen.”Button said he thinks the slide in gold prices was really a reaction to developments in the global bond market.“We had CPI, PPI this week,” he said. “There was a lot of consternation in markets about how it was ignored, but the bond market isn't exactly ignoring it. You've got U.S. [30-year treasuries] at 5.11% now, UK long end blowing out… everywhere, really. I think it's just hitting the point where you have to start pricing in rate hikes.”Button said we’ve entered a period where good news is bad news as far as rate expectations are concerned, because they enable the Fed to countenance rate hikes.“Retail sales was pretty good yesterday,” he noted. “I think the market is sniffing out some inflation.”He pointed out another worrying development: The oil futures curve is following the yield curve higher now as well.“[WTI crude] is $3 higher again today,” he said. “We've been really focused on the day-to-day in oil, and that's fair because that's what's in the headlines. But December just keeps ratcheting higher, $83 now in December. Even at the start of last month – the peak of the war – you were still at $70. Now you're pricing out higher for longer.”“The market took it on faith for a long time that oil prices were going to fall quickly after this conflict, and Trump's losing a lot of credibility on that,” Button said. “He's jawboned markets around this Iran war for seven weeks now, but it's not getting done, and oil's three bucks higher today at the front end, a buck and a half at the back of the curve. And then the bond market's starting to notice. Economic data's running hot. I could give you a hundred reasons why inflation's coming.”Button pointed to Nvidia’s upcoming earnings report next week as another reason why the market could be jittery.“Any sign of weakness from Nvidia – I'm not even talking the consensus,” he said. “They’ve got to beat everything in the consensus by 10%, which is surely what the market's priced in. Maybe 15%. Any problems with Nvidia, and you've got a big risk-off. It's the linchpin to the whole thing.”Button said that even with higher inflation becoming entrenched, he doesn’t see gold prices benefiting as a hedge anytime soon.“I don't feel like there are any hedges anymore,” he said. “I think you have to get to the point where the Fed overdoes it to compensate, or we just run it hot. You need some sort of monetary policy mistake to get there, or some kind of stupid government reaction, and some kind of recession. Something else needs to break for that to really work. I think there's just so much leverage and everything, and there's just an inclination to sell.”Alex Kuptsikevich, senior market analyst at FxPro, expects gold prices to continue their decline next week.“Last week’s impressive rise was mirrored in this week’s price action, with the price returning to $4,515,” he said. “A look at the price chart continues to indicate strong resistance around the $4,700 level, near which the 50-day moving average also lies. All this further demonstrates the bears’ strength, as they continue to assert their dominance in price formation, establishing a sequence of lower local highs since the peak at the end of January. We might also note the seasonal pattern of increased sales around the middle of the month in March and April, which is repeated in May.”Kuptsikevich noted, however, that “the decline was driven not only by technical factors but also by political factors, including tax hikes and the Indian leader’s call to cut back on purchases. Towards the end of the week, this was compounded by market disappointment with the US-China summit's outcome, which accelerated gold sales amid the dollar’s rise following oil prices. So far, we are seeing increased buying as the price approaches $4,500.”“The technical picture itself is not so clear-cut, as, apart from resistance in the form of a falling 50-day moving average, there is also support in the form of a rising 200-day moving average, which has halted sell-offs for the past two and a half years,” he wrote. “In the coming weeks, these opposing forces will converge. As the positive breakout scenario from the recent downtrend has not materialised, we should expect selling pressure to intensify towards $4,350, with an attempt to push the price lower.”Analysts at CPM Group issued a Sell recommendation on Friday afternoon, with an Initial Target Price of $4,400 between May 15 and 29, 2026, and a Stop Loss at $4,630.“After moving in a tight range between 7 May and 14 May, gold prices have come off sharply today,” they wrote. “Gold prices had risen to a peak of $4,783.40 during this period of consolidation. A nearly 52-week high in 10-year U.S. bond yields today helped precipitate a decline in assets across the board. It is also common for investors to take profits across the board ahead of the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere.”CPM said much of the selling appears to be speculative, and there may not be that much selling in the physical market.“There are many investors, most we would say are hesitant to sell their physical gold given all of the economic, financial, and political problems around the world,” they said. “If anything, many investors are looking to add to their physical gold holdings and appear to be waiting for prices to decline in order to provide a buying opportunity. This could preclude a sharp decline in gold prices.”“That said, market volatility could rise in the coming weeks, which could push gold prices sharply lower, albeit briefly,” the analysts warned. “If gold breaks below $4,380 the next stop could be $4,200. Given the state of global conditions, market sentiment could turn on a dime, and gold prices could be back above $4,700 very quickly. In the meantime, trading the range could be profitable if timed correctly.”Michael Moor, founder of Moor Analytics, expects to see gold prices trend downward next week.“LOWER, unless we take out lower timeframe formation above mentioned below,” he wrote. “In a Higher time frame: I cautioned on 8/16/18 the break above $1,183.0 warned of renewed strength. We have seen $4,443.1. This is ON HOLD. We held exhaustion at 56192 with a 56268 high and rolled over $1,526.8. This is OFF HOLD. On a medium timeframe basis: The trade below 52554 (+15 tics per/hour) projects this down $220 minimum, $740 (+) maximum—we attained $1,155.4. The trade back below 52036 (+13 per/hour) has brought in $1,103.6 of pressure. The trade back below 51606 (+13 per/hour) has brought in $1,060.6 of pressure. The trade below 48530 (+4 tics per/hour) has brought in $753.0 of pressure. These are OFF HOLD. We held exhaustion at 40956 with a 41000 low and have rallied $817.7. The trade above 41814 has brought in $736.3 of strength. The trade above 43642 has brought in $553.5 of strength. The trade above 47119 (-12 tics per/hour) projects this upward $155 min, $540 (+) max—we attained $205.8 so far.
