Inflation Data Drags S&P 500, Nasdaq Lower -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05-13

1604 ET - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq lose ground as tech shares come under pressure following the release of hotter-than-expected inflation data for April. Consumer prices rose 3.8% in April from a year earlier, driven by a surge in gasoline prices following the war in Iran. The Dow Industrials and defensive sectors in the S&P 500 gain ground as investors rotate from some riskier investments. U.S. oil prices climb back above $100 a barrel as the U.S. remains far from reaching a deal with Iran over its nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz. DJIA rises 56 points, or 0.1%, to 49760, while the S&P 500 loses 0.2% to 7400 and the Nasdaq slips 0.7% to 26088. (patrick.sullivan@wsj.com)
